“Home” by Brooklynn Shaw

Home, is a person.

Home is late night talks and sleeping in until almost noon,

performing concerts for no one else but ourselves at 2AM.

Home is driving to Sonic for drinks and cheese fries, blasting music and recreating that one scene in Perks of Being a Wallflower to David Bowie.

Home is practically living at each other’s houses,

squishmellows and blankets piled high around us as we scroll on our phones, only needing each other’s presence.

Home is the summertime, playing Just Dance and going to the lake.

It’s getting ready together for everything.

Home is taking hundreds of pictures and videos because you don’t wanna forget a single second of our time together.

It’s games, practices, dances, parties, jobs, boyfriends, crushes.

Home is in everything I share with you.

It’s the shared playlists and matching shirts,

the clothes left at each other’s houses because we can just get it next time.

It’s the way you hold my hand in a crowd so I am always by your side.

Home is the way we can talk about anything and everything, dark or sad,

and can walk away knowing the only thing that has changed is that we now understand each other just a little bit better.

Home, is my best friend.

Home, is you.

Author’s Note:
I wrote this poem after moving away from my best friend. It was a really hard time for me, and now we aren’t even friends, but I’ll always remember our good times together and the joy we shared. This poem means a lot to me personally, because it’s a reminder that even good things can die, but that’s a part of life.
