“I Hope You Love Who You Are” by Carolyn Ingram Davis

I hope you fall in love with the person you are

I hope you fall in love with the way your face was so beautifully crafted

I hope you fall in love with the way your hair looks when left natural

I hope that you fall in love with the way your smile spreads across your face

I hope that you fall in the love with the reflection that stares back at you in the mirror

I hope you fall in love with the way you look in the summertime,

when your tan lines become more vivid

and your cheeks have a faint pink to them

I hope you fall in love with the way you look in the fall,

when you can finally wear that scarf you’ve been wanting to wear since last February

and as slowly your tan lines fade away

I hope you fall in love with yourself in the winter too,

when family comes for the holidays

and after a big hug they comment about how big you’ve gotten

and how beautiful you now are

I hope that when they say this to you

You’ll have the mind to believe them

And finally I hope you still love all of who you are in the spring,

when the sun finally begins to come out from behind the clouds again

And you get to wear that dress with the little flowers on it

I hope when you see yourself in the mirror with it on,

you’ll smile at how much you love it

Through all the seasons,

and all your highs and low,

I hope that you will still show up for yourself and give yourself love in the way you deserve

I hope that you won’t let comparison steal this love or your joy of embracing the unique person you are

So I hope that if you do not love who you are, that through your journey of life,

you will pick up pieces of love that wait for you along the way

Author’s Note:
I wrote this piece for the young women around me and also for myself, as a reminder that we are all beautiful in our own ways, and every day we need to show up and love ourselves, our flaws and all!
