A tree as tall as the skies,
With a shadow that conceals me from the sun.
Soon to be touched by the blade,
Though it has many more years left to live.
The tree that was a titan of the skies,
Is now a sorrow stump.
What once was a critter’s haven,
Is now a lifeless map of rings.
Nature’s lanterns glow,
As dazzling as a diamond in the sky.
Soon to be hidden by the dusty fog,
Though they guided sailors out on the fresh seas.
The stars that used to wink at me,
Are now faded pearls.
What once were bejeweled beacons,
Are now cloaked by a poisoned blanket.
The sea, boundless and vast,
Its waves whisper stories of our ancestors.
Soon to be engulfed islands of waste,
Though its shimmery dances stretched to the horizon.
The sea that was the Earth’s voice,
Now echoes its helplessness.
What once was a limitless canvas,
Is now a testament of nature’s cries.
Author’s Note:
I was inspired to write this piece because I wanted to highlight the effect of human activities on Earth’s environment. I wrote this poem to make readers think about and reflect on deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution.
