With the doors locked and the blinds down
and all four walls enclosed,
the room becomes a safe, holding secrets;
Secrets of loneliness and infidelity.
Brutal events take place.
Muffled cries shatter glass,
but not one person comes to the rescue.
There’s no savior.
The acts in the dark win.
They will always win, won’t they?
Children fall into the fingers of the sick,
as their nails sink in.
Still, the world continues spinning
while people follow robotic routine
and maimed laws to harness selfish control.
When no one is around,
hearts are broken and souls are stolen.
The poor baby, the ruining received,
it’s horrific and hidden away.
Did it even happen if nobody knows?
Author’s Note:
This piece holds a lot of weight for me. It sort of opens a window to all of the violence in the world that remains untold. My hope is for it to give a voice to silenced victims of abuse, sexual assault, and other unjust violence, especially occurring during childhood.
