“What Does It Mean to Be a Poet?” by Nakki Asmah

A poet is an alchemist, a magician with a quill. Tainted with every color of the rainbow. A pen so wondrous that it can turn even the most joyful moments into those of grief. For how their soul bleeds into each piece crafted on a flavorless paper. A paper that now holds the spirits of those before. To be a poet means to be cursed. For now you see the world for what it is, and it is your task to broadcast it. To almost feel the weight of death upon your wrists. To think introspectively at a young age, but still feel so old. An elder trapped with a bounded body. So you write and write to escape something deep within. To be a poet means to be forever tired. To forever yearn for something that may never grace your fingers tips. But at least through your art people can understand something you laid down your life to.

Author’s Note:
This piece was inspired by own personal search for what it meant to be a poet. This is personally one of my favorite pieces because of its depth of words to desperately try to explain or understand something.
