“Why Live?” by Prajusha Kalita

Who am I?
Who are we—really?

Why do we follow routines,
seek validation,
feed on each other’s approval
simply to feel alive?

Why abide by laws
written by the same hands
that tremble like ours?

Why are we the only creatures
who feel like this—
so deeply,
it becomes unbearable?

Why were we given such utterly complex minds
just to silence them
with noise?

We cry without wounds,
bleed without blood,
fear without reason,
and still smile on schedule.

We built this world.
Then made it too small
for any of us to fit in.

We created standards
to cage the chaos,
then locked ourselves inside.

We’re insecure
in a society we ourselves designed.
Alone, among reflections
of ourselves.

We could have made paradise.
But we made systems instead.
Comfortable lies
to protect us
from our own potential.

We are ants—
oblivious,
brilliant,
lost.

The true outside?
It’s inside, inside us.
A universe buried
beneath overthinking.

But we run from it.
Fill the void
with borrowed beliefs
and call it living.

So I ask:
Why exist at this point,
if not to awaken
before the dream ends?

Author’s Note:
I’m Prajusha, and I use writing and poetry to control my mind and express my deepest thoughts. I’m a critical overthinker, often lingering on questions I know I can’t answer. This piece depicts that overthinking as I ponder on the purpose of our existence.
