I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,
while that same flag flies high above missiles sent overseas in the name of “protecting America.”
And to the Republic for which it stands, where billionaires fund campaigns and children learn lockdown drills instead of holding hands.
One nation under God, indivisible, yet carved by red maps, blue maps, book bans, and borders made deliberately invisible.
With liberty and justice for all,
while justice gets delayed for some and liberty is something others must crawl for at the border wall.
Author’s Note
To me, this poem represents how I hear the Pledge of Allegiance every morning at school, but I can’t help but notice how some of the things it says contradict what I see happening in America. I wrote the poem to question those promises of liberty, justice, and unity by comparing them to the problems and inequalities that exist in the country.
