“Deception” by Sylvie

Drinking Gold Flake

Amidst the snowflakes,

All while thinking about you.

Smoke from old cigarettes,

Laments playing from the cassettes,

Even the aspen stands with steadiness,

But my nightingale sings for a night that’s endless.

Author’s Note
The poem ‘Deception’ centers on the theme of the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia and longing. The poet fills the mind of the reader with dual imagery comparing the aspects of nature with a person’s subconscious mind. The poem explores how a night is endless which is also evident due to the refusal of full stop in the poem’s last line. The poem is inspired by the concept of loss without death. The poet’s beloved is not anymore with her and she now visualizes her beloved in elements of nature symbolizing broken and lost love. Leaves of the Aspen tree shake easily even with slightest of breeze. Ironically in the poem even the Aspen stands firmly while the nightingale sings the songs of lost love in an endless night, symbolizing never ending grief.
