Do I truly know why I am here?
This goal I have set,
Is it the one that was assigned to me
When I was born?
The path I walk,
Do I walk it out of instinct,
Or because I watched those in front of me
Walk down it?
I do not know
Who I am
Or who I was meant to be.
All I know
Is my destination.
When heading north,
They say,
Look to the sky,
Follow the stars or the sun;
They are one and the same.
I was not meant to be a pathfinder,
Yet I must adopt the skills
In order to escape.
Escape?
But where is it
That I must escape from?
Is it escape,
Or merely finding a place
I feel myself?
Am I the person I was
When I was born?
Will I be the person I am now
When I die?
The questions
That fill your head
As you walk down the path
To the goal you have chosen,
Or… the one that was chosen for you.
I know one thing
That if I do not move forward,
I will stay where I am,
I will not stay where I am.
I wish to see
What this beaten path
Has to offer.
Yet a part of me
Looks toward the rough
And dark forest,
A path untaken,
A treacherous one.
It calls, it calls as does a siren
To fishermen at sea.
I shall not venture there,
Yet my feet
Have already begun to move.
The tall trees
Will block the sun
And the stars.
I will be lost…
So I close my eyes
And allow for my body to move.
I do not know
When they will open,
But I know
It will be at the end of my path.
Author’s Note
I have struggled with finding my reason for being on this floating rock for a long time. I thought that following a path that was laid out for me was the one I was meant to take, but as time went on, I still felt lost and didn’t know what I was doing. I realized it was because this path was not mine; it was never mine. So, I decided to make my own path, regardless of the struggles I may face. This piece is meant for those who have been walking down a path others have walked before them but still feel lost along it. Feeling lost is okay, but feeling lost on a clear path is not. That’s what this piece means to me.
